Description
A coating of Rime Ice is on all the trees on the west side of the Oswego River. This image is from last year around this same time of the year, when we had what I would call a more normal winter with several sub-zero days. Rime ice is created when the super cold water droplets hit the cold tree branches, in this case. Some people, including myself, refer to this as hoar frost, but after reading the differences, I think this condition is caused by Rime Ice from the water vapor rising from the river. What I love about this image is all that is going on! We have River Smoke or if it were the ocean, Sea Smoke, there is a lot of birds, mostly Canada Geese and Ducks in the river and one juvenile bald eagle near the tree tops. Plus you have this fantastic River Smoke and all the Rime Ice that has collected on the tree branches, creating this wonderful Winter Wonderland!
